Do you remember the Millennium Goals? World leaders celebrated the year 2000 with a solemn pledge to reduce poverty and hunger, check the spread of AIDS, get boys and girls into school, and improve health and sanitation, and all by 2015. But the UNDP's collection of facts and figures already shows that if we carry on as we are, the only target likely to be met is that for halving poverty, and that is entirely due to the success of China. It is so vast that growing prosperity in China lifts millions of people above the poverty line.
